A’s vs. Giants – Game 1

First off….I want to say Thank You to Zito. The A’s finally got a win tonight, which we really needed. The past 2 games we’ve only scored 3 runs (not good). But tonight made up for it in more ways then one.

- First off, today is officially “Dallas Braden Day” in Oakland

- Braden’s Grandma got to throw out the first pitch (and did great I might add). She then got to unveil the new logo for Braden’s perfect game in the outfield wall, along with Braden & Powell. I’m really glad & proud to see that they honored Powell as well, after all he called the perfect game.

- On top of all of the excitement it’s the Battle of the Bay series! Zito started off really strong in the first few innings (kind of got me a little worried there), but my A’s stepped up. Which didn’t make Zito too happy. He’s now 0-4 against the A’s.

- Crisp also made his debut tonight, in fact he caught the first pop up of the game to give Cahill the out, and he almost hit a Home Run! If the wall was just a few inches shorter…so close!!

All in all it was a great game, we finally got some much needed runs in. Congrats to Cahill for getting the win tonight. Hopefully games 2 & 3 go in our favor as well. Can’t wait to watch.

Go A’s!

Top Ten List…

I just finished watching Braden present the Top 10 List on Letterman tonight, and it was great! It included:

- His Grandma being right when she said “Stick it A-Rod”

- Braden realizing how cool his name is

- Hoping pop singer Justin Bieber will now notice him

- He is Iron Man!

- And to finish the list, Kate Hudson might be expecting a call from Dallas, haha!

I must say they did really great with this list. I was afraid they were going to over due the whole A-Rod thing, but I must say, Letterman’s writer’s did really well. And even before they started the list, Braden was true to who he is…very funny!

Afterwards, Queen Latifah came on and said how much she likes Braden’s Grandma because, “she can talk some smack.” haha.

To add to the night, the A’s also played against Texas and after a long 13 innings, we finally won! And boy do I mean “finally”. There was so much back and fourth, every time we would get the lead, they somehow would tie us. And if you noticed, they always seemed to get a base hit or a person on with 2 outs.

On a side note, Powell also got the 1st Stolen Base of his career! Congrats!

What a night…now I need to remind myself to grab a copy of Sports Illustrated which I heard is coming out tomorrow…Braden’s on the cover!

Go A’s!

A Whole Lot of News Today

Wow…news is sure rolling out fast in Oakland today. Scratch “today” I mean tonight…since all of this happened after Fan Appreciation Day & the game. Let’s see, where do I begin…

- First off…Cust is put on ASSIGNMENT!?!?! Are you serious? I just saw him today talk to us fans about this up coming season. This came completely out of the blue. I figured him or Powell would be our DH. But sounds like Beane wants Chavez to take over that spot competely. Well see how this goes.

- In better news, Gonzalez grabbed the 5th spot. I’m happy for him, he seems to really be getting more and more comfortable on the mound. Congrats Gio!

- Next up, Crisp was put on the DL because he dislocated his finger sliding into second during last night’s game against the Giants. Hopefully it’s not too bad, and he can make a quick comeback. Because now that we don’t have Cust (I’m still not over that one yet) I’m not sure who they will put in for the time being. My first pick would be Buck, but I’m not sure how he has been performing lately. We shall see.

- I was originally going to start my blog about Fan Appreciation Day today…but as you can see other news got in the way. I’ll try and post pictures that I took tomorrow.

Day 2 = Pitching Duel

Well, day 2 in the Bay Bridge series didn’t go as well as yesterday. But even though the A’s lost 2-1, it was still a good game.

- Brett Anderson pitched 5 innings and only had 3 hits off of him…tonight was definitely his night!

- Powell charged into Home Plate to get Uribe out for trying to steal…if you watch it back and see how Powell slid into the plate, all I can say is Ouch!

- Gaudin is back! It was so great to see him back on the mound and in an A’s uniform. But he needs to remember to cover home plate when the catcher goes after a ball.

- It was also nice to see Edwar Ramirez on the mound. He did pretty darn well, very impressive.

- Once again, Kouz got an awesome hit up along the wall for another double…back to back nights. It reminds me of when we first got Carlos Gonzalez (Boy I wish we still had him). He had a record for the amount of doubles he hit consecutively. Thanks Kouz!

- Oh Kilby…I don’t know what else to say but, it wasn’t pretty.

All in all we played really well. And it was nice seeing some of our new guys get up to bat and play. Well see who takes the series tomorrow afternoon….but this time, it’s in our neck of the woods.

Go A’s!

My Lineup

Alright…Opening day is a week away, so I figured I better sit down and see who I think should start for the A’s. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Catcher: Hands down Suzuki…I think that sums it up

1st Base: I’m still going to go with Barton. But I will say that Chavez seems to be doing pretty well over at first, so he will be my backup.

2nd Base: Ellis…no explanation needed here either (I hope he gets a Gold Glove this season)

SS: Pennington…this guy has an arm that’s worth noting

3rd Base: This is probably the one spot where I am still not sure. If I had to pick I would go: Kouz, then Rosales, Fox, Chavez (I only put him last because I have him at first base)

Outfield:

- Davis (with out a doubt) but I’m not happy that the A’s are moving him over to left field. I mean we all know Davis can run (and fast)! So put him back in Center Field where he can basically cover the majority of the Outfield.

- Sweeney…leave him in right field where he dominates

- Crisp…Since I want to see Davis in Center and Sweeney in Right that leaves left field for Crisp. I haven’t heard much on how he’s been playing though, so we shall see. But my back up’s would be Buck and Cust.

DH: Powell….I’ve wanted Powell to become our DH for a long time. With his poor knees I don’t see him lasting long as a catcher. And even though the A’s were thinking about putting him over at first or even in the outfield, I just think he would be better as out DH. He can hit the long ball for sure..and we definitely need runs (the more the better).

The Starting Rotation doesn’t have much wiggle room this season. The A’s have made it know who 4 out of the 5 will be, so I’ll just name Gonzalez as who I think the 5th spot should go to. I was really pushing for Cahill, but after watching the A’s against the Dodgers last week, I think Gio has really come into his own on the mound. He even stated that he’s learning to control his emotions so the batters won’t see how he feels. And after 2 seasons ago he has improved the most in my opinion.

Spring Training is in the Air

It’s that time of year again!! The boys are back in Arizona, and from what I’ve been reading things are looking pretty good (knock on wood). I’m most excited to hear that Duchscherer, besides undergoing a minor nerve procedure, seems to be looking great and ready to get back on the mound. Go Duchscherer!!

Next up we have Chavez. Now I’ll be honest, I’m still wanting Barton to stay over at first (sorry Chavez). But any guy that is willing to dive into the splits to get an out is dedicated to our team. And I think Barton can have a really good future with us. Or my next pick would be Tommy Everidge (he can produce some big hits) and he’s a local boy, so I’m going to be kind of bias there.

I also heard they’re thinking about having Chavez become a DH, which I’m going to have to disagree with as well. I’ve been wanting Powell to become our DH for a long time now, and now that there’s a chance he might get that opportunity I really hope it works out for him.

Well see how the rest of training goes, and only 1 more week until the first spring training game…I can’t wait!!

New DH = Powell!!

Landon Powell hasn’t had a lot of game time this season, with Suzuki playing in the most games for a catcher in the American League. But I’ve thought for a while now that Powell has great potential, and should be used as our DH. In fact, I think today’s (first career) Grand Slam proves my point. We definitely don’t want to, nor can we afford to lose Suzuki as our starting catcher. With his average plus his great defense behind the plate, no one can touch him. But Powell, can and really should be used. With just 36 games under his belt this season and 110 at bats, he’s batting .255 (better then some of our starting players). He also has 27 RBI’s!! And I don’t know about you, but we NEED runs desperately!! Our rookie pitchers are doing pretty well, but there are a lot of games where they lose because we couldn’t bring our runners in! We need to utilize our players, build off their strengths, and NOT trade off the good ones!
