27 Up & 27 Down = A Perfect Game
What a game! Dallas Braden just pitched a perfect game today, on Mother’s Day! It hasn’t been done in A’s history since since “Catfish” Hunter in 1968, and it’s only been done 18 times prior to today’s game in all of MLB history. Braden was just on today, as he shut down the Tampa Bay Rays. Like I said…what a game.
Now, I’m going to cover two games in one blog because I got to go to yesterday’s game. Yesterday, Ziegler was kind enough to purchase 200 tickets for military men & women, and their families.

I must say Sheets did a really good job, it seems as though he might finally be getting comfortable on the mound. He only allowed 2 runs and they were all in the second inning.

It also helped that our guys really stepped up. And thanks to an error made by the pitcher, Pennington was able to steal 2nd and 3rd. We ended up scoring 2 runs in the first (great way to start a game).

Barton also got a big play in over at home plate when the runner at 3rd got caught in a pickle while trying to run home…as you can see, it didn’t work out too well for the runner.

This series was great, we took the series with 2 wins, but we ended it with a perfect game! Now that’s baseball!
Go A’s!

Dear AL West Teams…
Dear Texas, LAA Angels, & the Mariners:
I would greatly appreciate it if you all could lose your upcoming games. Us A’s fans like seeing our team in first place. Its been a rare sight these past couple of seasons, but we would like to stay in first all season. I don’t think I’m asking for a lot.
Thank you,
Opinion4athletics
** On a side note…Sheets just got his first win of the season! He played so much better compared to his last 2 starts….Congrats Sheets. And great night for Barton as well…2 doubles!
Go A’s!!

My Lineup
Alright…Opening day is a week away, so I figured I better sit down and see who I think should start for the A’s. Here’s what I’ve come up with:
Catcher: Hands down Suzuki…I think that sums it up
1st Base: I’m still going to go with Barton. But I will say that Chavez seems to be doing pretty well over at first, so he will be my backup.
2nd Base: Ellis…no explanation needed here either (I hope he gets a Gold Glove this season)
SS: Pennington…this guy has an arm that’s worth noting
3rd Base: This is probably the one spot where I am still not sure. If I had to pick I would go: Kouz, then Rosales, Fox, Chavez (I only put him last because I have him at first base)
Outfield:
- Davis (with out a doubt) but I’m not happy that the A’s are moving him over to left field. I mean we all know Davis can run (and fast)! So put him back in Center Field where he can basically cover the majority of the Outfield.
- Sweeney…leave him in right field where he dominates
- Crisp…Since I want to see Davis in Center and Sweeney in Right that leaves left field for Crisp. I haven’t heard much on how he’s been playing though, so we shall see. But my back up’s would be Buck and Cust.
DH: Powell….I’ve wanted Powell to become our DH for a long time. With his poor knees I don’t see him lasting long as a catcher. And even though the A’s were thinking about putting him over at first or even in the outfield, I just think he would be better as out DH. He can hit the long ball for sure..and we definitely need runs (the more the better).
The Starting Rotation doesn’t have much wiggle room this season. The A’s have made it know who 4 out of the 5 will be, so I’ll just name Gonzalez as who I think the 5th spot should go to. I was really pushing for Cahill, but after watching the A’s against the Dodgers last week, I think Gio has really come into his own on the mound. He even stated that he’s learning to control his emotions so the batters won’t see how he feels. And after 2 seasons ago he has improved the most in my opinion.

Spring Training is in the Air
It’s that time of year again!! The boys are back in Arizona, and from what I’ve been reading things are looking pretty good (knock on wood). I’m most excited to hear that Duchscherer, besides undergoing a minor nerve procedure, seems to be looking great and ready to get back on the mound. Go Duchscherer!!

Next up we have Chavez. Now I’ll be honest, I’m still wanting Barton to stay over at first (sorry Chavez). But any guy that is willing to dive into the splits to get an out is dedicated to our team. And I think Barton can have a really good future with us. Or my next pick would be Tommy Everidge (he can produce some big hits) and he’s a local boy, so I’m going to be kind of bias there.
I also heard they’re thinking about having Chavez become a DH, which I’m going to have to disagree with as well. I’ve been wanting Powell to become our DH for a long time now, and now that there’s a chance he might get that opportunity I really hope it works out for him.
Well see how the rest of training goes, and only 1 more week until the first spring training game…I can’t wait!!

Trade Crazy!
Well it must be that time of year again…Billy Beane has gone trade crazy! As usual when I get on the computer, one of the first websites I go and check out is the A’s. And the news for today is all of the trades that have suddenly occurred with our team. So let’s try and figure them all out together, shall we?
First off: Wuertz and the A’s have agreed on a contract to keep him in Oakland! I know this doesn’t have anything to do with the trades, but he’s staying in Oakland and Beane didn’t release him!
Ok, now on to the trades:
As of Sunday, we picked up Gabe Gross who was a free agent, and recently with Tampa Bay. From my quick research I see he’s been with Toronto & the Brewers as well, and his batting average is only in the low to mid 200′s. Not too great, but hopefully that will improve with his time in Oakland. However, I hope this isn’t Beane’s way of replacing Sweeney! Because we definitely need Sweeney and Davis in our outfield this season.
And to finish Sunday’s trading, we also received Steve Tolleson from Minnesota’s waivers. I hear he’s an infielder, but that’s all I’m seeing right now. I’m guessing the A’s are going to try and put him wherever we need the most help. Which sounds like over at first base, even though I think Barton does really well there. I mean any guy that is willing to fall into the splits to make sure he gets an out for his team is dedicated (but that’s just my opinion).
Now onto today’s trades…Adam Rosales and Willy Taveras were picked up from Cincinnati for Aaron Miles (and either another player or money – which we don’t seem to have much of compared to most clubs).
With all of the trades we’re now over our limit for the 40-man roster. This means our players are going to get shifted around. Taveras, after getting picked up is going straight to assignment alongside Eveland, and someone else is going to get moved because they want to make room for Tolleson.
Whew, that was a lot of info!
If anyone has any info about these players the A’s just picked up I would be glad to hear about it…Thanks!

Was it worth it?
I don’t know about you, but was it really worth it for Kennedy to talk back to the Home Plate Umpire on Tuesday night’s game against the Rangers? I mean come on; sure it should have been called a ball and not strike 3. But when the game has literally just started, and you are the first at bat for us, let’s pick our battles more wisely. And of course, just my luck; I had my camera on Kennedy the entire time until he turned to walk away. Then no sooner did I lower my camera was he thrown out….dang, that would have been a great picture.
So we’ll have to do with the before and after pictures:
Now onto some better highlights of the night’s game: our defense was great, especially with Cahill on the mound. Sure he had a few instances where he could have let the moment get the best of him, but he stayed cool under pressure. Our rookie pitchers are just getting better & better as the season comes to an end.

Too help secure the win, our offense really stepped it up. I mean we scored 9 runs and not one of them was a home run. We were hitting the ball all throughout the park, and technically, Barton hit an in the park home run, but because of the error thrown by Kinsler, they ruled it a triple (even though Barton ended up scoring off of it). But that’s ok, a hit’s a hit! I’m not sure Kinsler’s going to want to look back on his time against the A’s this season.

Overall it was a great game, and if I described everything along with the 501 pictures I took this entry would go on forever. So I’ll let it here, and posts extra info later this week. Stay tuned for more great pics.
