Battle of the Bay Series – Day #3
The A’s got a much needed win today, and not only that…but we swept the Giants! Our pitching staff did great; we only gave up 1 run in the entire series…very impressive. Sheets did great today too…and even though he got a no decision, the rest of his stats show how well he performed.
I think this will definitely boost our moral, because we hadn’t been playing to our best potential lately. Let’s just hope we can keep the momentum going in the 10 game road trip were about to start.
On to Baltimore!
Go A’s!
So Close…
A 3 Run Home-Run from Pennington + him and Rosales both had 4 hits each in todays game, and we somehow still lost to the Rays! Oh my.
I must say though, it was a good game. We were down 4-0 in the bottom of the 2nd, which is never good…esp. that early on in the game. But Pennington came back in the 3rd and hit a 3 run shot! Beautiful. We then were able to get bases loaded and scored 1 run. So now…we’re tied, new ball game, right? I wish…
What did they do? They too decide to hit a 3 Run Homer and then a solo…eh. Then to top it off, we might have actually tied them if something went our way. Pennington got a nice hit in right field, that got him to 3rd safely. However once it bounced off the ground, it hit the foul pole, which automatically makes it a ground rule double! I had never heard of that rule before, especially since it hit the ground first and stayed in the park. I don’t know. To me there’s no difference from the ball hitting the wall, but they saw a difference. So as a result we got a run taken away from us.
At least we can saw we played well…and got some good hits.
And on a side note, I want to send a thank you to the LAA…they lost their game tonight, which means we are still 1 1/2 games ahead…it’s a small lead, but hopefully we can gain some ground.
Go A’s!
Cust Continued…
I’m not sure what Beane was thinking when he put Cust up for assignment. And I’m not alone…it made the homepage of Yahoo! today. Now I know some people aren’t happy with his batting average. Heck, I’ll admit it, it’s not too great. But first off, you can’t judge his performance based on just 50 at bats in Spring Training! That’s crazy! If you’re going to do that, then who’s to say Sheets shouldn’t have been reassigned. He’s had an ERA of 11.2 this season at Spring Training and he hasn’t played in over a year! I’m not saying Sheets should get put on assignment….I’m just trying to make a point that this is ridiculous!
Now like I said, Cust’s batting average hasn’t been great in past seasons, but I think people are forgetting 2 important things:
1) Cust gets on base! Sure it’s not by hits all the time (which is obviously prefered) but he gets walked (a lot)! I don’t know about you, but I would rather see a guy get on base from a walk then walk back to the dugout with 3 strikes and you’re out!
2) He’s our HOME RUN HITTER!! Being in last place last season was no picnic, but we do have some things going for us. So why would you want to take someone who can hit over 25+ home runs a season away?!?!
I just don’t get it…Cust I’ll miss seeing you in our outfield.

Sheets…
Oh Sheets…what can I say? Besides the fact that I’m happy it’s only Spring Training. I really believe in our team this year, and I think we are going to have a come back year. But then when I hear that Sheets didn’t get 1 out during his last game…I’ll admit, I’m a little worried. Then lets add into the equation that he gave up 9 earned runs (one being a 2-run home run).
Boys…we have our work cut out for us!
The good thing to come out of all of this is he feels great. Which is most important. Now if we can improve his stats along the way. I don’t think I’m asking for much, am I?
Spring Training
9-3…really?!?! Why did we have to lose to the Cubs 9-3? I hope this isn’t a sign or preview of what’s to come. Luckily it’s only spring training…better yet, it’s only the 1st game of spring training, so we WILL improve.
On to better news…Adam Rosales & Chris Carter both hit solo home runs. That right there is impressive. Way to go boys! Not sure who else got to play today, but I read Sheets will get to play tomorrow. I definitely want to see how he does, and hopefully we can get a win.
Go A’s!!
And the 5th Spot goes to???
Ok, so by the sound of things the A’s are 99.9% sure about 4/5 members of the starting rotation (I’m leaving room for a margin of error). With Duchscherer coming back, we’ll have him along with Braden, Anderson, & Sheets. So far so good, in my opinion, but we’ll see how Sheets performs, especially after missing an entire season due to an injury. But with all the feedback I’ve been getting, I’m pretty confident he will do well in Oakland – Thanks Everyone!
So now that leaves us with the 5th & final spot to fill since all hope was lost today when Geren said we wouldn’t have a 6 man rotation. Oh well, I can dream can’t I? So the remaining contenders are:
1) Cahill
2) Gonzalez
3) Mazzaro
My personal choice is Cahill – he did pretty well last season, especially for a rookie put into the starting lineup right away. And on a side note, he pitched against Texas last September when I attended and won 9-1…so my vote is kind of bias (haha)
Next we have Gio & Vin. Both had their ups and downs. Gio didn’t start off well in my opinion (in fact I remember 1 game where he was brought in as a reliever in extra innings – we had finally gotten ahead by about 4 runs, and he blew the game!) That still haunts me. But he has since greatly improved, especially with his curveball). As long as he can stay cool under pressure he deserves a shot. And Mazzaro started off great, but then it went down from there. He definitely has great potential, I just think may need to go to Triple-A and work on his game…then make a great comeback with us.
Well, those are my opinions for tonight…we’ll see how the A’s narrow down the last spot in the rotation (should be interesting)
Ben Sheets Becoming an A’s!
The A’s just picked up starting pitcher Ben Sheets from the Brewers today for a good $10 million. From what I’ve read he missed all of last season, but really impressed the scouts at a throwing session last week, which is definitely good news. Our rookie pitchers last season have really been impressive, but since we were sadly without Duchscherer, our boys didn’t get a long enough break in between games.
If there are any Brewer fans or anyone that could give me some insight on Sheets, that would be great…Thanks!
